Inspiring curiosity: Emma Donnelly’s journey with Western Science Rendezvous

Passionate Western students like Emma Donnelly are the reason that Western Science Rendezvous can provide fun and informative science education to thousands of kids. Emma is a third-year PhD student in Biomedical Engineering and she is currently serving as the event co-chair for the 2024 Western Science Rendezvous event.

Emma’s journey with Science Rendezvous began over four years ago. Reflecting on her journey, Emma shares the reason she got involved in Science Rendezvous back in 2019.

“When I saw the email looking for volunteers for the event, the mission statement of the event really resonated with me as a graduate student. I wanted to be part of an event that would help bring science knowledge to the next generation and hopefully inspire them.” 

Emma started out in the logistics committee, eventually moving onto the program committee in 2021. Today she is the event co-chair. Her years of experience as a volunteer are a testament to her enduring dedication to promoting STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics) education.

Empowering volunteers: Emma’s impact as the event co-chair

Alongside Yasmeen Shamiya the other event co-chair, Emma plays a vital role in the planning of Western Science Rendezvous. As the event co-chair she gets word out about the event, coordinates the hiring of organizing committees as well as the planning of booths at the event. Her strategic communication skills have been instrumental in ensuring that the event can run smoothly. Emma remarks that her role as the event co-chair is challenging but crucial. 

“In this role I get to spread the word about Science Rendezvous throughout Western and get people on board to run booths on the day of the event. This is an essential part of the event, and without these volunteers from throughout the university, Science Rendezvous wouldn’t exist. “

For Emma, all the hard work is worth it once the day of the event rolls around.

 “The day of is definitely the most rewarding. Just seeing the work we have done come to life is a really rewarding feeling. Seeing people enjoy the event and seeing smiles on kids’ faces is something I look forward to every year.”

Emma’s vision for the future

Looking ahead, Emma is filled with optimism for the future of Science Rendezvous at Western University. With each passing year, the event continues to evolve and expand its reach, leaving an incredible mark in the London community. She also hopes to expand the accessibility of the event each year.

“Accessibility is an essential part of Science Rendezvous. Our team has been really great at year after year increasing the scope of kids we’re reaching and making targeted efforts to include everyone in this event.”

Ultimately, Emma Donnelly’s work as the event co-chair epitomizes the spirit of Science Rendezvous. Her unwavering dedication to inspiring curiosity, fostering learning, and championing the wonders of STEAM is demonstrated through her commitment to the planning of this event. Through her tireless efforts she has made a profound impact on the lives of countless individuals, shaping a future where science truly knows no bounds. 

For Emma, the goal of Science Rendezvous is to inspire all people to learn more about STEAM.
